Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Why was my location chosen to host a beacon?+
Your location has likely been chosen because it is a tall building, is high up or it is in an open space and unobstructed.
Do you need to drill to install a beacon?+
Nope, our standard installation is completely drill free! In some cases (sometimes when fitting an antenna) we may ask to use a drill but this is entirely up to the owner.
How much do the beacons cost to run?+
The Medjay Network Beacon requires 5 watts of energy which only costs around £8 per year (roughly equivalent to an LED light bulb) and only 1-5kb/s of bandwidth!
Will I need to pay for electricity?+
No way! We will cover the lot, hosting a beacon comes at absolutely no cost to the host.
Is it harmful?+
No, the beacons use the 868MHz short range wavelength, the same used by wireless alarm systems (such as fire alarms and intruder alarms) which are subject to operational and technical reuirements.
Is it secure?+
Security is a primary concern for any mass IoT deployment and LoRaWAN is by design very secure, authentication and encryption are mandatory and it uses two layers of cryptography.
How many devices are currently deployed?+
Worldwide there are over 20,000 of these devices and we are bringing them to the UK by only choosing a select few locations that benefit the network.
How can the IoT benefit my area?+
The IoT is growing rapidly and it is estimated that there will be 27 billion IoT devices at the end of 2021. By creating a network we hope that it will encourage businesses to use this network and create new jobs and exciting technologies in your area.
